Problem

The laptop powers on (keyboard light is active/on) but the screen remains completely black. The system does not proceed to the BIOS or boot sequence, indicating a failure during the Power-On Self-Test (POST).

Solution

This issue was resolved by addressing poor contact between the system memory (RAM) module and the DIMM slot.

Resolution Steps (Cleaning and Reseating RAM):

  1. Power Down and Disconnect: Shut down the laptop completely, disconnect the AC power adapter, and remove the main battery (if external) or disconnect the internal battery connector.
  2. Access RAM: Locate and remove the service panel necessary to access the RAM modules.
  3. Remove and Inspect: Gently release the retaining clips and remove the RAM module(s) from the slot(s).
  4. Clean Contacts: Using a dry, lint-free cloth or an approved electronic contact cleaner, gently clean the gold contacts on the RAM module(s).
  5. Reseat RAM: Reinsert the module(s) into the DIMM slots, ensuring they are fully seated and the retaining clips snap firmly into place.
  6. Reassemble and Test: Reassemble the laptop. Connect the AC adapter and power the system on to verify successful display initialization and boot.

Prevention

  • Handle by Edges: Always handle RAM modules by the edges to prevent skin oils or residue from contaminating the gold contacts.
  • Static Precautions: Use appropriate anti-static measures (such as an ESD wrist strap) when performing internal maintenance to prevent damage to sensitive components.
  • Environment Control: If the device is operated in a dusty environment, consider professional internal cleaning to prevent contact buildup over time.
